CNC lathe toolpath checking: from 2D preview to machine validation

Toolpath review is more than checking whether a line looks smooth. Review the part profile, stock, tool orientation, rapid moves, clearance, and controller interpretation together; a 2D preview answers only limited geometry questions.

Scope follows TurnMate’s current 2D preview and static-check features. This guide does not claim full machine kinematics/collision simulation or provide a safety release.

Check geometry first

Confirm the drawing revision, units, scale, X/Z coordinates, and diameter/radius convention. Review endpoint continuity, arc direction/radius, duplicate segments, profile direction, and stock allowance. Incorrect geometry may still produce a visually continuous path.

Separate cutting and rapid moves

Review each move’s start/end, feed/rapid state, and associated operation. Check tool changes, approaches, retracts, grooving, and threading against the process plan. Verify tool orientation, offsets, work zero, and modal state because a 2D trace may omit machining context.

Stock and workholding boundaries

Include stock diameter/length, chuck position, grip length, tailstock or sub-spindle conditions in the review. A 2D drawing without full machine and fixture geometry cannot prove there is no interference among turret, holder, chuck, workpiece, and tailstock. Material-removal graphics also do not simulate cutting forces, deflection, or dynamics.

Increase validation in stages

Static text checks can flag recognizable syntax or modal risks; a 2D preview helps inspect simplified profile/path relationships; target-control graphics or machine simulation checks the configured control and machine model; dry run, single block, and first-article measurement still require the operator to follow machine-builder procedures. Each stage has model and input limits.

Review checklist

  • Confirm drawing revision, units, coordinates, and profile continuity.
  • Separate rapid/feed moves and review approach, retract, and tool-change positions.
  • Account for stock, chuck, tailstock, turret, and actual workholding space.
  • Continue with target-control/machine simulation, dry run, single block, and first-article measurement.
